1 July Keti Koti Festival
On 1 July 1863, slavery was abolished in the former Dutch colonies of Suriname and the Dutch Antilles. With this action, came the end to a period of around 200 years of slavery in the colonies. Every year, on the 1st of July, NiNsee organises a huge celebration in the Oosterpark, Amsterdam. The celebration is to commemorate the abolition of slavery and remember the victims. 17 August Tula Commemoration
On 17 August, we celebrate the great slave revolt that began on this day under the leadership of Tula on the Kenepa plantation in Curaçao. Each year, NiNsee plans a commemorative evening with music, poetry and speeches.
23 August UNESCO Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition
On 23 August, in celebration of the UNESCO International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, NiNsee will host the annual Glenn Willemsen memorial lecture. Dr. Glenn Willemsen was the first director of NiNsee and its founding father.
