Education

The chief function of the educational domain is to inform both young and old about the history of Dutch slavery and to indicate the impact this history has on the present day. This transfer of knowledge makes a contribution towards shaping the corresponding norms and values which concern, among other things, anti-racism, equality and emancipation. Within the educational domain, there are distinct programmes for school age children, young adults and adult education.   For school age children and young adults, the institute plays a substantive role in the design and adaptation of the educational curricula. In addition, the transfer of knowledge via education takes place by means of touring the exhibitions and museum presentations at the institute.   Each year, thousands of school children take the tour of the NiNsee exhibitions and participate in educational workshops organised by NiNsee.

Aside from the formal angle, the informal approach of education is equally important.  The importance of reconstruction, processing and empowerment is evident in that it helps the descendants of the enslaved to develop informative activities on their own (such as workshops, readings, films, and stage productions) where information is presented and questions are discussed concerning their own past.

The history of Dutch slavery has an international character. For this reason, it is necessary that during educational activities, attention is given to that aspect of the past. International proportions and correlations between the different Dutch overseas territories are of vital importance and have exercised a lot of influence on Dutch society, visible today.   From the past, much can be learned concerning the future.
